Anelka eyes Blues improvement

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka believes his side need to improve their results against the title rivals if they are to have any hope of winning the Premier League.

The Blues have only picked up one point from four matches against their two title rivals in Liverpool and Manchester United this season.

Last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool saw Chelsea slip into third place, three points behind the Reds and five adrift of leaders United, who also have a game in hand.

"The title hasn't yet been lost, but it will be really hard now," Anelka wrote in his weekly column for Lesdessousdusport.fr.

"From the start of the season we’ve lost our tests against the biggest teams. Every time it seems our opponents are at least as strong if not stronger than us.

"Whenever the biggest matches in the Premier League come along we have never been at the level of the real Chelsea.

"We need to raise our standard of play, step up a gear, get stuck in more in the big matches and we need to improve our technical displays."
