Oliver Kahn tips Bayern to finish on top

Friday, February 20, 2009

Oliver Kahn does not expect his former club Bayern Munich to have any problems defending their title, even though they have struggled to move into pole position this season.

The Bavarians have yet to climb to the summit of the Bundesliga this campaign and currently fourth in the table, trailing leaders Hertha Berlin by just two points with 14 games remaining.

But Kahn, who retired in 2008 after a career spanning more than 20 years, believes Bayern are still the team to beat in the Bundesliga.

"With the quality that is in this squad, it certainly surprises me that Bayern are not miles ahead at the top," he told TZ newspaper.

"Bayern won the double three times in the last four years and it may be a bit tougher now to get yourself focused all the time instead of just looking at the Champions League.

"They are playing with a lot more verve when they play in Europe this year. But probably the squad is thinking: we are just two points off, we will end up champions!

"It's dangerous not to be fully focused on your task, because the rest are clearly trying their best.

"But which club is really performing with the necessary consistency? Even if Bayern plays at 80 percent they would have to come out champions.

"The Bundesliga will be boring if everything is too simple for Bayern."
