Raúl doesn't want testimonial match

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Raúl's agent has dismissed talk of him returning to the Spain national team for a November friendly against Argentina to mark the Spanish Federation's centenary as he perceives it would comprise an 'artificial' homage to him.

The Spanish Football Federation was seeking to call him up for the centenary at Real Madrid's Bernabéu stadium in recognition of his exploits - Raúl is Spain's all-time top scorer with 44 goals.

But after hearing the idea, Gines Carvajal, the representative of Raúl, thinks that idea is outrageous as an homage is usually reserved to stars at the end of their careers.

Carvajal told Veo Marca: "If they were to ask him if he wanted to return to the national team then obviously he would, but he does not want to go back for just one game as a testimonial.

"He is a player that is still at the peak of his career, so I do not know why they would want to give him a testimonial.

"Raúl is a player that is at his best, scoring goals and physically in great shape.

"Ryan Giggs has just been given a new contract at 35 so I do not know why we are talking about testimonials and homages for Raúl."

The talismanic striker has not featured for his country for the past two seasons despite a return to form at club level which last week saw him become his club's all-time leading scorer with 309 league goals.
