Makélélé refutes retirement speculation

Friday, March 27, 2009

Paris St Germain captain Claude Makélélé has denied reports suggesting he is about to hang up his boots at the end of the season.

The 36-year-old was quoted by Spanish newspaper AS saying he would quit in the summer and become sporting director for the capital club from the start of next season.

However, the former Real Madrid, Chelsea and France midfielder insists he was merely suggesting possible routes for the future, not giving notice of his intentions.

Makélélé told the club's official website: "There was a misunderstanding.

"I never stated I wish to hang up my boots at the end of the current season, or become sporting director. That isn't what happened.

"I simply said that it was conceivable, that it was a possibility and AS have too quickly drawn conclusions from that."

He added: "I have a very exciting season to finish and I am not asking myself the question about quitting or continuing.

"It will be time to take stock of the situation in the summer with the directors."
