A solitary goal from Michael Essien proved to be enough to secure the win over Manchester City and keep Chelsea's title dreams alive.

Guus Hiddink's men weren’t under any threat from City for the whole match.

The visitors were lucky to remain on level terms in the opening two minutes when Frank Lampard's effort was chalked off by a linesman's flag, but it offered an early warning to City.

And after 18 minutes, Chelsea went ahead through Essien's second goal in as many matches. The Ghanaian midfielder was left wide open on the edge of the box and, after being spotted by a Lampard free-kick, lobbed the ball over the stranded Shay Given.

The Blues felt they should have had a penalty when Nicolas Anelka was hauled back and hacked down by Nedum Onuoha, but ref Mike Riley ignored their appeals.

Michael Ballack should have added a second in the 36th minute but the German midfielder curled his effort around the post with Given well beaten.

Tottenham climb into 11th place in the Premier League table with a 2-1 away success over Aston Villa.

The visitors took the lead after only five minutes when Jermaine Jenas headed home from close range after Brad Friedel could only parry Aaron Lennon’s cross.

Friedel then had to make a fine one-handed stop from Luka Modrić as Spurs were happy to rely on the counter-attack.

Emile Heskey almost leveled in first-half injury time, but his header bounced off the woodwork.

The home side began the second period seeking an immediate equaliser but they were rocked as Darren Bent's tap-in on 50 minutes made it 2-0.

John Carew was brought on after 60 minutes and the big Norwegian hit back for Villa with five minutes remaining, but Spurs held on to move into their highest position of the season.
