Real Madrid stayed six points behind leaders Barcelona after a 2-0 victory over Real Valladolid at the Bernabéu.

Valladolid appeared certain to break the deadlock on 25 minutes, but defender Luis Prieto headed wide with the goal at his mercy after Iker Casillas had parried Pedro León's curling free-kick.

Raúl opened the scoring shortly before the break as he turned in Gonzalo Higuaín's centering pass to score his 15th goal of the season.

The visitors felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Pepe appeared to foul Valladolid striker Henok Goitom inside the area with ten minutes remaining, but play was waved on.

From the counter-attack, Arjen Robben wrapped up the win as he latched onto Guti's 30-yard pass before placing his shot past Sergio Asenjo.

Rafael van der Vaart had a late chance to add a third goal but his sliced shot hit the outside of the post.

Atlético Madrid enhanced their Champions League hopes with a deserved 2-1 victory against Deportivo La Coruña at the Riazor.

Sergio Agüero opened the scoring in the stroke of half-time as the Argentinian played a neat one-two with striker partner Diego Forlán and a burst of speed took him away from Alberto Lopo and into the area, where he coolly clipped the ball past Daniel Aranzubia.

Atlético came within a whisker of doubling their lead five minutes after the break but Maxi crashed his shot off the underside of the bar.

The visitors grabbed a deserved second on 69 minutes when Raúl García burst through the center and slipped the ball wide to Simão, who ghosted almost unchallenged between Luis Filipe and Pablo Amo before sliding the ball home.

Second-half substitute Rodolfo Bodipo pulled one back three minutes from time, but it was too little, too late from the home side.
