Newcastle United failed to claim a much-needed victory as they were held to a goalless draw with Portsmouth at St. James' Park.

Mark Viduka was presented with a glorious chance to open the scoring early in the second half after Michael Owen put him in with a clever backheel, but the Australian could only stab his effort straight at David James as the blue shirts closed on him.

Viduka then managed to squeeze the ball through the Portsmouth defence to leave Owen with just the keeper to beat, but his tame effort was too close to James and the keeper was able to save with his legs.

The visitors had a shout for a penalty rejected when Fabricio Coloccini thrust out a leg and seemed to bring Peter Crouch down in the box on 50 minutes but referee Mike Riley was in no mood to award a spot-kick.

And it could have been worse for the Magpies had Richard Hughes' 82nd-minute header landed six inches to the right.
