Ryan Giggs wins PFA Player of the Year at 35

Monday, April 27, 2009

Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs has been named Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year for the first time at the age of 35.

The Welsh winger has won just about every major honour available during his time at Old Trafford, but failed to land the PFA prize despite displaying remarkable consistency over the course of the last 17 years.

"I won two Young Player awards but this one is the big one," Giggs said.

"It’s arguably the best individual award you can get because it is voted for by your fellow players."

He added: "It is an exciting season. It’s going down to the wire and it is big game after big game and that’s what you want at a club like Manchester United.

"A lot of credit must go to Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been a massive influence in my career. I first met him when I was 13 and he knows me better than anyone."

Giggs was one of six United players in the PFA's Premier League team of the year, joining goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, defenders Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidić and Patrice Evra and winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Completing the lineup were Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson, Liverpool pair Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka and Aston Villa winger Ashley Young.

The 23-year-old Young was also named the PFA Young Player of the Year in recognition of his considerable achievements this term.

"It's a massive achievement for the club and my team-mates around me," said Young.

"It's a great honour and I'm delighted."
