Johan Cruyff: Ronaldo is not worth £80m

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Johan Cruyff has stated that he is disappointed with Real Madrid's big spending philosophy.

While Los Merengues are set to spend even more than the £142 million they are to pay for Kaká and Cristiano Ronaldo, a number of Barcelona's current crop of stars have come through the club's ranks.

"They are two distinct philosophies," Cruyff told Cadena Ser. "One is Barça's where the youth team is drawn from and the other is done by buying.

"I am on the side of the first type because it has more advantages.

"If we play and 90 per cent of the team are from Catalunya or nearby and the players have been brought through the ranks then they will seem more like one of us."

Real's £80 million capture of Ronaldo will break the world record once the transfer is completed later this month and Cruyff believes it will cause a 'domino effect' around Europe.

"Nobody is worth that much money. I do not agree with the amount they are paying," he continued.

"If one club pays that much money then it is like a domino effect and other clubs will start to do it.

"Now Manchester United have lost an important player and they will have to spend big in order to replace him."
