How Gladiator film inspired Barcelona's Champions League glory

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola used a secret weapon to beat Manchester United in the Champions League final last week.

To motivate his players for the showdown, Guardiola showed them a video that included clips from the film Gladiator just minutes before the match.

The 38-year-old coach ended the pre-match warm-up session early to show the players the seven-minute video, which also showed some of the best moments of play of each player during the season.

El Pais reports that at the end of the video, when the lights were turned on in the dressing room, some players were in tears.

Guardiola hatched his plan on the Sunday before the final as he spoke to TV3 journalist Santi Padro about the film idea and the movie was made by Jordi Gaya.

Now the footage has been broadcast on Catalunyan channel TV3 and spread on the internet.
