World Cup qualifier: England move closer to qualification

Table of Contents
England took a massive step towards qualification for the 2010 World Cup with a comfortable 4-0 victory at Kazakhstan.

Fabio Capello's men took the lead five minutes before the interval as Steven Gerrard swung over a cross to the far post, where Gareth Barry nodded back across goal and into the bottom corner.

Emile Heskey made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time when Gerrard's speculative 40-yard chip could only be palmed away by a back-peddling Kazak goalkeeper Aleksandr Mokin and the Aston Villa hitman was on hand to poke home the rebound.

England added a third on 73 minutes when Glen Johnson's cross was acrobatically converted by Wayne Rooney.

There was still time for number four as Frank Lampard hammered home from the penalty spot on 78 minutes, after Heskey was bundled over in the area.

Lineups:

Kazakhstan: Mokin; Kirov, Abdulin, Kislitcin, Karpovich; Nusrbayev, Skorykh, Ostapenko (Ibrayev 27), Kukeyev; Averchenko, Logvinenko

England: Green; Johnson (Beckham 75), Terry, Upson, Cole; Walcott (Wright-Phillips 45), Barry, Lampard, Gerrard; Heskey (Defoe 81), Rooney
