Barcelona set to sign Maxwell from Inter Milan

Thursday, July 16, 2009

Barcelona announced on Wednesday that they have reached an agreement with Inter Milan to sign Brazilian defender Maxwell.

The Catalan giants, which was seeking a replacement for Sylvinho, had been negotiating with Deportivo La Coruña for defender Filipe Luís but could not agree on the transfer fee.

A statement on Barça's official website read: "Barcelona and Inter Milan have agreed in principle the transfer of the Brazilian player Maxwell.

"The price of the transfer would be of €4.5 million, with €0.5 million more dependent on variables."

Should the transfer go through, the 27-year-old Maxwell would be Barcelona's first signing since becoming the first Spanish club to win the treble - La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League.

While arch rivals Real Madrid have already splashed out over €200 million on Kaká, Raúl Albiol, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, Barcelona have been quiet on the transfer front.
