Aston Villa have completed the signing of winger Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough for a £12 million fee.

The England winger, who will be 25 next week, has put pen to paper on a four-year-deal after passing a medical.

"I am really pleased to be joining Villa. It's a massive football club with good ambition," Downing told AVTV.

"It's certainly been a summer of speculation for me but I have tried to switch off and get a good break after my injury.

"When it became apparent that Villa were interested I was very excited. I wanted to come as soon as I met Martin O'Neill so I am delighted it's now sorted out."

Villa boss O'Neill added: "We are getting a multi-purpose player who, when fit, will be terrific for the club."

Downing is O'Neill's first summer signing but is unlikely to be available to play until October at the earliest as he is still recovering from a broken foot.

He will have an operation to remove a steel pin from the fractured bone in September before stepping up his fitness programme.
