Joleon Lescott cheered by Everton fans despite City flirtation

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Want-away Everton defender Joleon Lescott got the clearest possible message that the Goodison faithful want him to stay at Merseyside this season.

The England international was cheered with every touch of the ball in the Toffees' 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Málaga on Friday.

Lescott is a target of Manchester City and he has told Toffees boss David Moyes that he would be interested in a move to Eastlands.

It was suggested that the 27-year-old could be subject to a backlash from the Everton faithful during Friday's friendly.

But any fears that fans would react by jeering Lescott were quickly dispelled as they chanted his name before and during the match.

"Joleon played really well, he was terrific," Moyes told evertonTV.

"And you only needed to hear the crowd's reaction to him, they know that what we are doing is correct. There was a lot of cheering for him, and rightly so."

Lescott played the full 90 minutes and was reminded of the crowd's feelings when the Gwladys Street fans sung his name at the end of the match.
