Tottenham midfielder Luka Modrić suffers broken leg

Sunday, August 30, 2009

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that midfielder Luka Modrić suffered a fractured fibula in the game against Birmingham City on Saturday.

The Croatian international limped out of the game in the 49th minute complaining of a sore calf following a tangle with Lee Bowyer.

He had a scan on Saturday night which revealed a break and, while the 24-year-old will be out of Premier League action for some time, he will also miss his country's World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley on Wednesday.

Modrić told Croatian daily Jutarnji List: "It's like my whole world has crumbled because I will be out for at least six weeks.

"I am terribly sad. It wasn't a ferocious tackle but it hurt awfully and I knew something was wrong the moment it happened.

"The worst feeling is knowing that I will be watching both my club and country from the sidelines for a while."

A statement on Spurs' official website read: "X-rays have determined that Luka Modrić sustained a fracture to his right fibula during Saturday's victory over Birmingham City at White Hart Lane."
