Harry Redknapp hails Luka Modrić

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has praised his Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić.

The 23-year-old made a slow start to his Premier League career after arriving from Dinamo Zagreb 12 months ago for £16.5 million.

However, he flourished under Redknapp towards the end of last season and the Spurs boss believes Modrić is an exceptionally talented player.

He told reporters: "Modrić has proved to Tottenham fans what a fantastic footballer he is.

"Sir Alex Ferguson said to me last year that he could play in any team. I agree with him, he's so good.

"Anyone would love to have him. When I was at Portsmouth I spoke to (Croatia boss) Slaven Bilić. Niko Kranjčar was a good player but they all said Modrić was the best player. Slaven said he was world class.

"When I first came to Tottenham, he reminded me of Eyal Berkovic, who was a terrific little player I had at West Ham and Portsmouth. But this little fella is strong as well, he’s a powerful lad.

"Modrić can head the ball, he tackles hard and he’s got a big heart. He’s a great all-round player and we’re seeing the best of him now."
