Liverpool agree fee with Real Madrid for Xabi Alonso

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has finally seated his move to Real Madrid after both clubs agreed a fee believed to be £30 million for the Spain international.

The Reds had previously rejected a £25 million offer from Real for the 27-year-old with Anfield boss Rafa Benítez adamant that only a fee of £30 million would trigger a deal.

But Alonso made it clear he wanted a transfer and Benítez has finally accepted an offer of around that amount from Real.

"Liverpool Football Club have reached agreement for the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, subject only to a medical," a statement on Liverpool's website said.

"The terms of the deal will remain confidential and undisclosed."

Real issued a statement of their own, confirming he will have a medical in the Spanish capital on Wednesday.

Assuming all goes well, he will join his former Liverpool team-mates Álvaro Arbeloa - who moved to Real last week - and goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek at the Bernabéu.
