Italian taxman seizes Maradona's earrings

Saturday, September 19, 2009

Tax authorities in Italy have seized a pair of earrings from Argentine legend Diego Maradona in an effort to recover unpaid taxes from his playing days at Napoli.

Maradona handed over the ear studs worth about €4,000 at a clinic in northern Italy where El Pibe de Oro checked in recently in a bid to lose weight.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, the former World Cup winner owes the country €31 million in back taxes from his time at Napoli, where he played a starring role between 1984 and 1991.

This is not the first time the tax authorites have swooped on Maradona.

Three years ago, Italian authorities took two Rolex watches worth an estimated €10,000 from him when he was back in Italy for a charity match.
