Burglars struck at the home of Aston Villa winger James Milner while he was playing for England in a 2-1 win over Slovenia at Wembley on Saturday.

According to The Birmingham Mail, the attempted break-in was discovered when his girlfriend returned to his home near Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, after the match.

Police said no-one was home at the time and nothing appeared to have been stolen.

But Det Chief Insp Paul Keasey said: "It's a shame someone representing his country in sport should be targeted like this."

Milner joins at least nine Liverpool players whose homes have been hit by raiders while away on Champions League or international duty over the past two years.

Manchester United star Darren Fletcher's fiancee was even held at knife-point while he was in Italy earlier this year.
