An afternoon to forget for Manchester United on Merseyside saw the defending champions slump to a 3-1 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring in the 16th minute after good work from Antonio Valencia, but the Toffees hit back almost immediately through Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.

David Moyes threw on Dan Gosling and Jack Rodwell after the break as he went in search of a winner and the youngsters duly obliged as they sealed a memorable success for the Merseysiders with two late goals.

Gosling had only been on the pitch five minutes when he put the hosts ahead in the 75th minute of an absorbing contest.

And Rodwell, who had been on the pitch for just over a minute, hammered the final nail in United's coffin with a superb breakaway goal late on.
