Anfield legend returns to Liverpool as soccer schools ambassador

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Liverpool's record goalscorer Ian Rush has been appointed as the club's official soccer schools ambassador.

The Kop legend will be charged with raising Liverpool's profile abroad through the soccer schools and he will also have his eye out for any young talent.

"It's absolutely fantastic to be back," Rush told Liverpoolfc.tv. "For me this is the best club in the world and the best supported one too.

"Everyone knows that there are soccer schools running throughout the world and we know there are elite players that people look to sign up.

"But we also want to give average kids a chance to learn the Liverpool way. We are aiming to do this and it won't just be in the UK, it will be worldwide.

"It's great for me because after doing my coaching badges and my UEFA Pro Licence, this is a superb opportunity.

"It's a great adventure and I'm looking forward to it. It's a lot of travelling but I want to help the club to develop as best as I can."

Rush, the Reds' record goalscorer with 346 strikes in 660 games, will also work with the club's commercial team to help develop and support partnerships with other global sponsors and brands.

Ian Ayre, Liverpool's commercial director, added: "Rushie is one of the best known names in world football and I'm delighted he's agreed to work with us.

"We've invested heavily in the redevelopment of our soccer schools business and with his help intend to roll out a global franchising opportunity within the next 12 months."
