Japanese duo recreate the Infamous 1982 Cruyff Penalty

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

For some players it is obviously too boring to thrash the ball with a penalty just to the goal.

Remember this famous Johan Cruyff penalty for Ajax Amsterdam in 1982?

Instead of shooting at goal, Cruyff passed the ball to on-running team-mate Jesper Olsen, who drew the goalkeeper before passing back to Cruyff to tap into an empty net.

Now Japanese duo Tomoaki Makino and Hisato Sato have shown that the trick still works.

This method is totally within the laws of the game which state that:
  • The player taking the penalty kicks the ball forward.
  • He does not play the ball a second time until it has touched another player.
  • The ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward.
