Europa League Final: Atlético Madrid 2-1 (AET) Fulham

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Diego Forlán hit a 116th-minute winner to give Atlético Madrid a 2-1 win over Fulham in the first ever Europa League final in Hamburg.

Atlético went ahead in the 32nd minute when Forlán, who netted late in extra-time to put Liverpool out of the semi-finals, deflected home Sergio Agüero's mis-hit shot.

But Roy Hodgson's men showed the spirit they have in Europe all this year as they leveled within five minutes with Simon Davies volleying home wonderfully at the far post.

The second half saw few chances for either side, and again extra-time looked like ending in stalemate until four minutes from the end when Forlán flicked Agüero's cross with the ball rolling past goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer via a deflection off Fulham defender Brede Hangeland.
