Arsenal starlet Fran Mérida has returned to his native Spain after he signed for Atlético Madrid on a free transfer.
The 20-year-old, whose Arsenal contract to expire on June 30, has agreed to a four-year deal with Los Rojiblancos after rejecting offers of a new deal with the Gunners.
Mérida joined Arsenal from Barcelona's youth system in 2006 but struggled to emulate fellow Catalan, Cesc Fàbregas, and break through into the first team.
He made just 16 first team appearances for Arsenal, scoring two goals, while the English club sent him to Spain on loan spell with Real Sociedad in 2008.
