Premier League: Chelsea 8-0 Wigan

Monday, May 10, 2010

Chelsea lifted the Premier League title for the first time since 2006 with an emphatic 8-0 mauling of Wigan Athletic on the final day of the 2009/10 season.

The hosts' title celebrations began just six minutes into the match as Nicolas Anelka fired home, with Frank Lampard picking himself up to slot home the second from the penalty spot as Gary Caldwell saw red for attempting to swap shirts on 31 minutes.

Then in the second half, Chelsea ran riot as Salomon Kalou and Anelka made it 4-0 before Didier Drogba landed himself the Golden Boot, netting a 17-minute hat-trick to finish the campaign on 29 goals.

And there was still time for left-back Ashley Cole to make it 8-0 to complete a record top-flight triumph for the new champions on another humiliating afternoon in London for the Latics.
