Edin Džeko to stay at Wolfsburg next season

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

VfL Wolfsburg general manager Dieter Hoeneß has announced that Bosnian striker Edin Džeko will be staying at the Volkswagen Arena next season.

Džeko, who was the Bundesliga's top scorer last season with 22 goals, was free to leave Die Wölfe on Monday had a €40 million release clause in his contract been met.

But no club stumped up the cash required to release the front man and Hoeneß said in a statement: "The deadline within which a transfer of Edin Džeko would have been possible this year has now elapsed. We are very happy that this period of uncertainty is over.

"Edin staying with us is the most important personnel issue of this summer. He is a player of exceptional quality, who wouldn't have been easy for us to replace.

"We have now some planning security for the coming campaign and we can work solidly on the rest of the squad details for the new season."

The news will come as a huge boost to new boss Steve McClaren, who has been tasked with re-establishing the former champions as a force in German football.
