iPhone app that mocks Man City's long wait for silverware

Friday, June 4, 2010

A soccer fan and his techie mate have come up with an iPhone app that mocks Manchester City's inability to win a major trophy for the last 34 miserable years.

Billed as "Manchester's Neverending Clock", they've even taken out a roadside billboard poster advertising their 59p mobile phone download.

The app mirrors the banner on display at Manchester United home matches showing the years, minutes and seconds since the Eastlands club last won a silverware – which was back in 1976.

It comes 12 months after City goaded United fans with a billboard hailing their new signing, Carlos Tévez from their city rivals.

The man behind app, Lester Hadfield, 28, from Blackley, Manchester, said the idea came while watching City struggle to a 1-1 draw with West Ham.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "It was a bit of light- hearted joke at first.

"My mate has a company, the Francesco Consultancy, which does iPhone apps and he asked me if I had any ideas.

"As I was watching the City game, it dawned on me.

"They haven't won anything for years and had done the Tévez thing, so I thought this would be a bit of decent banter.

"At the start it was just a laugh but we've had over 2,000 downloads – including some City fans."

Mr Hadfield added: "We've got a few things in the pipeline. It's years since Liverpool last won the Premier League so we might set one up for that."
