Mesut Özil expects Werder Bremen stay

Monday, August 2, 2010

Germany star Mesut Özil is staying with Werder Bremen and will see out the remainder of his contract with the Bundesliga side.

Özil became one of the hottest properties in football after helping Germany reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.

The 21-year-old has since then been linked with a move to a number of clubs, including Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester United.

But Özil, who has just a year left on his current deal, insists a move before the end of his contract will not happen.

He told Bild newspaper: "For now, my situation for the next 12 months is clear. Only the facts count and the fact is, I am under contract with Werder. I cannot know what comes after that.

"I am a friend of honesty. Many people extend their contracts long-term for better conditions, but two weeks later, they want to leave.

"I have never done that but have rather always respected my contract and been happy to fulfil it.

"Why should now be any different?"
