Euro 2012 qualifier: Portugal 4-4 Cyprus

Portugal made a disastrous start to their 2012 European Championship qualifying campaign as they were held by Cyprus in an eight-goal thriller.

Cyprus opened the scoring inside three minutes through Efstathios Aloneftis, but they were pegged back five minutes later by Hugo Almeida.

Michalis Konstantinou put Cyprus back in the lead in the 11th minute, but Raul Meireles made it 2-2 just before the half-hour with a powerful long-range shot.

Four minutes after the restart, Danny headed Portugal ahead for the first time only for Ioannis Okkas sidefooted an equaliser in the 57th minute.

Manuel Fernandes put Portugal back ahead three minutes later with a thundering shot into the top left corner, but Andreas Avraam nodded home an 89th-minute leveller to ensure a gripping contest ended all square.
