The announcement by the European and Italian champions on their website come a day after Rafa Benítez's contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

The statement read: "Welcome to Leonardo. The Brazilian will be our new coach to lead the team from December 29.

"Leonardo has agreed a contract that will keep him at Inter until 30 June 2012.

"We sincerely wish Leonardo the best of luck and believe that he has the class and experience of a champion and that his mentality will bring the team together to get the results we need."

The 41-year-old, who coached Milan during the 2009/10 season, becomes the fifth coach to make the move from the Rossoneri to the Nerazzurri, following Giuseppe Bigogno, Giovanni Trapattoni, Ilario Castagner and Alberto Zaccheroni.
