The Spanish giants have been linked with a host of forwards following a long-term injury suffered by Gonzalo Higuaín that has left the club with only Karim Benzema as their only senior striker.

Among those names is van Nistelrooy, who scored 46 goals in 68 games over a three-and-a-half-year period with Los Merengues before departing for Hamburg 12 months ago.

"There are lots of names being mentioned," Mourinho told a press conference.

"If in the end it's Ruud I'll be very happy. We coincided in England and I know him well as a player and a person. I'd be very happy if it's him."

And the player himself claimed he would think about the move.

He said after Hamburg's 1-0 Bundesliga win over Schalke 04 on Saturday: "We just need to see what happens in the next few days, but it is not easy for me.

"It is not just any club which have expressed interest, it is Real. They are the only club which can make me change my mind."
