Champions League: Arsenal 2-1 Barcelona

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Arsenal staged a remarkable second-half fightback to secure a memorable 2-1 home win over Barcelona in a thrilling first-leg match in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Barça dominated the first half and took the lead in the 26th minute when David Villa calmly stroked his finish between the legs of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny after latching on to Lionel Messi's flick-on.

Despite the visitors being in control, Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés gifted Arsenal a way back into the match by allowing Robin van Persie to level with a shot that crept inside the near post from a tight angle on 78 minutes.

And substitute Andrei Arshavin completed the comeback five minutes later as he finished off a flowing length-of-the-field move involving Jack Wilshere, Cesc Fàbregas and Samir Nasri.
