Champions League semi-final: Real Madrid 0-2 Barcelona

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Lionel Messi struck twice in the closing stages as Barcelona recorded a 2-0 win over 10-man Real Madrid in a bad-tempered Champions League semi-final first leg clash at the Bernabéu.

An ugly encounter, which was peppered with play-acting, petty fouls and hounding of the officials, finally boiled over in the 61st minute with Pepe seeing red following his late challenge on Daniel Alves, with José Mourinho sent to the stands for his reaction to the decision.

Barca sensed a great opportunity to take control of the tie and they finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute when Messi converted substitute Ibrahim Afellay's excellent cross from close range.

And the Argentina ace made it 2-0 with three minutes remaining when he dribbled past several Real defenders at pace before sliding a right-footed shot past Iker Casillas.
