The Rossoneri have 78 points with two rounds of games remaining and are nine points clear of second-place Inter, who have three games remaining but cannot overhaul their city rivals because of an inferior head-to-head record this season.

The triumph saw Milan pull level with Inter on 18 Scudetti, but both are still well behind Juventus who have 27.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri, after winning his first title as a coach, said: "I have to thank everyone - the players, the president - that has given me a great squad with a winning mentality.

"It's a beautiful moment and I'm very fortunate. To win the Scudetto in the first year is a great satisfaction.

"This success is deserved and is down to all the group. We all work together.

"We are also happy for the fans. We are sorry not to be in Milan tonight, but we will celebrate this week and then Saturday night at the stadium."

Alexandre Pato, who is Milan's joint-leading scorer alongside Zlatan Ibrahimović with 14 goals, added: "It's the first time I have won the Scudetto and this is a great day."

"The Scudetto has finally returned to the red and black side of San Siro," Milan president Silvio Berlusconi told Mediaset. "At the end of the day, I think the title is deserved."
