The Eastlands club are in a five-way fight to sign the Chilean winger with local rivals Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan and Barcelona.

It is believed that Barcelona are currently leading the chase for the 22-year-old, but Lombardo is hopeful of landing a player that he believes would have a huge impact at Eastlands.

"He is an excellent player for any big club in Europe," Lombardo told La Tercera.

"This past season he proved to be one of the best in Serie A, and because of that, his name is linked to many of the big clubs.

"He is a very fast player, a great champion, with a great personality and touch of the ball. He has the ability to score goals and supply assists for his team-mates. I repeat, it would be a major boost for any team.

"What I can say is that Manchester City are always aware of what's happening around great players and Alexis Sánchez fits the profile that our club is looking for.

"But I stress that we are in the transfer market here in Europe and there are a lot of rumours. Players like Sanchez are always on top of the lists for the big teams and that's normal As is normal in the list of City."

When asked whether City had made an offer to sign Sánchez, Lombardo said: "It's not something I can comment on. The company is working hard on purchases, but I'm not authorised to give any details, let alone talk about figures.

"There are people in charge, working with the coaching staff. This is what I can say.

"The market is an important issue and we want a great team for next season, with great players."
