Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo drew a huge crowd in İstanbul on Saturday when he attended the inauguration ceremony of a shopping mall owned by Beşiktaş chairman Yıldırım Demirören.
Ronaldo and his girlfriend, famous Russian model Irina Shayk, arrived in a private plane at İstanbul Atatürk Airport early Saturday and they quickly escorted to the car which awaits them.
Although Ronaldo was scheduled to sign autographs in the shopping mall, the session was cancelled due to the stampede.
Around 2,000 fans that have waited for hours just to meet the Portugal international felt disappointed with the news.
But Ronaldo can ease their disappoinment by his appearance on the balcony, and waved to the fans.
He said: "I love you all. I am very happy to be here in Turkey. I thank everyone who came here for me."
The trams running along İstiklal Street were forced to come to a halt due to the crowds, and some shop owners had to close their shops.
