La Liga: Real Madrid 4-1 Atlético Madrid

Sunday, November 27, 2011

Real Madrid continued their impressive run of form by claiming a 4-1 home win over nine-man Atlético Madrid to maintain a 12-year unbeaten run in the derby.

Adrián gave the visitors an unlikely lead on 14 minutes but less than 10 minutes later Real were level when Cristiano Ronaldo converted from the spot after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was shown a straight red card for bringing Karim Benzema down inside the area.

The hosts capitalised on their numerical advantage in the second half with Ángel di María marking his return from injury with a goal in the 49th minute before substitute Gonzalo Higuaín scored just after the hour mark.

Atlético were hanging on to avoid a rout and Diego Godin received a straight red for a foul on Higuaín inside the box, compounding the visitor's misery as Ronaldo netted his second penalty of the match to seal a 4-1 victory.
