The home side took the lead in the 35th minute through Aaron Lennon before securing the victory in sublime style on 63 minutes.

Assou-Ekotto appeared to pose little threat when he received the ball 30 yards from goal, but the left-back advanced unchecked before smashing an unstoppable drive that gave Toffees keeper Tim Howard no chance.

It was a remarkable way for Assou-Ekotto to score his first goal since August 2009 and there was no way back for Everton.

The the former Lens man was only available to play due to Cameroon failing to qualify for the African Cup of Nations this month.
