James Milner gave the visitors the lead with a deflected shot in the 51st minute before a Vincent Kompany own goal levelled it up for the home side just minutes later.

City boss Roberto Mancini claimed Agüero was ready to play but not fit enough for 90 minutes and he brought him on with 19 minutes remaining to deliver the game's killer blow.

Picking the ball up from Yaya Touré, the little Argentine darted away from Danny Welbeck on an angled run.

Next he evaded Rio Ferdinand's outstretched foot before his momentum took him away from Phil Jones.

Even a little push from Welbeck was not enough to put Agüero off as he kept his balance before crashing a stinging drive over David de Gea and into the roof of the net.

"He is not bad is he?" Milner told Sky Sports.

"He is so sharp when you get him in around the box. His composure and his finish at the end was superb. It gave us a deserved win."
