They smashed a window of the high performance blue Audi RS5, which retails for around £59,000, and took the vehicle from the owner's driveway.

"The car was stolen off his driveway from his home in Birmingham," Butland's agent, Gary Mellor, told the Stoke Sentinel. "Jack woke up to find it was gone on Sunday morning.

"It really was not what he wanted just before his Premier League debut. It has now been reported to West Midlands Police."

The 20-year-old then posted an appeal on Twitter offering a financial reward for information leading to the return of his stolen car.

The theft rounded off a bad day for Butland, who went on to concede five goals against Liverpool in his first starting appearance for the Potters.
