Co-hosts Switzerland are out from Euro 2008 after a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Turkey night in Basel.

Turkey came from a goal down to vanquish Switzerland with Arda Turan scoring an injury-time winner.

Following from their opening defeat to the Czech Republic means they are fail to qualify for the knockout stages.

Switzerland became only the second European Championship host country to fail to progress to the next round since 1984.

The Swiss played pretty impressive during a downpour in the first half and took the lead thru the goal from Hakan Yakin in the 32nd minute.

In the second period, the downpour ceased and so did most of Switzerland's creativity.

Instead, the Turks started to dominate the match, and Semih Senturk scored the equaliser in the 57th minute.

Nightmare for Switzerland came in stoppage time as Arda Turan sent a right-footed shot from outside the area and the ball looped over the keeper thru a deflection from Patrick Mueller to give the Turks the victory.

Both sides were without some of their key players because of injury problem.

The co-hosts lost their leading goalscorer Alexander Frei and his partner up front, Marco Streller.

The Turks were also missing their captain Emre Belozoglu and key defender Gokhan Zan.

The last time both sides met was in the World Cup qualifying playoff in 2005 in Istanbul.

The match finished with a Swiss success and ended with a shameful fight incident between both players.

The results sends Switzerland out of the tournament and Turkey go into their final match against the Czech Republic with a real chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Fatih Terim's men can join Group A leaders Portugal in the quarter-finals by beating the Czechs.
