Liverpool missed the chance to return to the Premier League summit after being held to a 1-1 draw by neighbours Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Fernando Torres missed a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the 28th minute as he surprisingly flicked a right-foot shot against the post from six yards.

Spanish winger Albert Riera then sent a 25-yard shot flashing just wide of Tim Howard's right-hand post.

Torres felt he should have had a penalty three minutes after the restart as a Phil Jagielka caught his right leg, but referee Howard Webb was not interested and waved play on.

Liverpool finally opened the scoring after 68 minutes when skipper Steven Gerrard took a pass from Riera before crashing home a 30-yard drive to send Anfield into raptures.

But with three minutes remaining, Tim Cahill headed home Mikel Arteta's free-kick to become the first player since Dixie Dean in the 1930s to score for the Toffees in three Merseyside derbies and deny Liverpool top spot.
