Wembley to host 2011 Champions League final

Friday, January 30, 2009

Wembley stadium has been named as venue for the 2011 Champions League final by UEFA's Executive Committee meeting in Nyon.

The stadium, long considered as the premier football venue in England, was selected ahead of Munich’s Allianz Arena and Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

Meanwhile, Dublin’s Lansdowne Road has been chosen as the venue for the 2011 Europa League final - the new name for the UEFA Cup. It will be the first ever major European final to ever be staged in the Republic of Ireland.

Reacting to the announcement, FA chairman Lord Triesman said: "We are delighted that UEFA have chosen Wembley Stadium to stage the Champions League Final in 2011.

"This is fantastic news for London and the UK and is acknowledgement of Wembley’s ranking alongside the very best football stadiums in the world.

"Wembley is a stadium for the big games and has a unique history that is sure to inspire Europe’s finest players."

The Champions League final returns to England for the first time since 2003 when AC Milan defeated Juventus at Old Trafford.

The old Wembley last hosted the final in 1992 when Barcelona triumphed 1-0 over Sampdoria.

The famous stadium was also the scene of Manchester United's 4-1 extra-time triumph over Benfica in 1968.

Ever since the stadium re-opened its doors in 2007 as a new 90,000-seat arena, the FA have harboured ambitions of hosting the continent's most prestigious club cup competition, but lost their 2010 bid to Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu home due to issues surrounding the taxation of the finalists by the British government.
