The Brits sure do love their footy

Steven Gerrard, Liverpool captain and bare-knuckle enthusiast, had an assault charge stemming from last year dropped in court, but it’s not all fish 'n chips for the soccer star as the England international still faces a charge of affray.

As anybody will tell you, the best strategy in a fight is to make sure you win the fight, and when you have some fellow soccer studs helping you to rein down blows on bar-goers, the odds of winning increase dramatically.

Good odds is exactly what Gerrard had during the fight when Marcus McGee, your run-of-the-mill businessman out for a pint and a round of trash talk, received a cut face and a lost tooth during the fight in Southport, Merseyside.

The incident stems from a December 29 late-night bar trip by Gerrard who was celebrating his side's 5-1 victory over Newcastle United.

All seven defendants in the case, including two Accrington Stanley players, Ian Dunbavin and Robert Grant, were rung up on affray charges.

A strategic betting man would wager that Gerrard and his fellow defendants’ April 3 date with destiny in Liverpool Crown Court will be nothing worthy of raising their glasses in celebration.

Those who play have to pay. And however lenient courts are on celebrities, Gerrard’s charging sends a strong message that no man – even one of the games finest – is above the law.

Gerrard was chauffeured away in his car after court concluded, unavailable for comment.
