Sampdoria have a foot in the Coppa Italia final after winning their home leg against Serie A leaders Inter Milan 3-0 despite playing with 10 men for the final half-hour.

The hosts took just nine minutes to open the scoring when Antonio Cassano struck past Francesco Toldo following a disastrous error by Colombian defender Nelson Rivas.

Giampaolo Pazzini then made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, turning in a corner after the away defence had fluffed earlier chances to clear.

The former Fiorentina striker scored again three minutes before half-time to ensure Samp would take a healthy advantage into the second leg at the San Siro later this month.

Inter's night hardly got better after the break with young striker Mario Balotelli taken from the pitch on a stretcher having collided with a post.

Samp had defender Daniele Gastaldello sent off for a second bookable offence on the hour mark, but Inter could not make their man advantage pay.

José Mourinho's men will now have to mount a magnificent comeback in the second leg to advance to the final.
