Rio backs Vidić for Player of the Year

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Rio Ferdinand believes his Manchester United defensive partner Nemanja Vidić deserves to be named as PFA Player of the Year this season.

The Serbian hardman, who endured a rare off day in defeat to Liverpool two weeks ago, has been a key component in United's awesome defensive performances with the Red Devils claiming a record 14 successive Premier League clean sheets earlier this season.

He has also scored a few goals for United along the way, prompting Sir Alex Ferguson to acclaim the 27-year-old as one of the best in the world.

"I think he should definitely be up there this year for player of the year, he's a top player," Ferdinand told Sky Sports News.

"The attacking players normally get the accolades and the adulation so it would be nice for a defender to win it. JT won it a few years ago but not many centre-halves have won it over the years.

"I think he will be up there. He has been our most consistent player this season along with Ryan Giggs and Edwin van der Sar. Those three have been our stand-out players in terms of consistency."

John Terry was named the PFA's Player of the Year in 2005 but a central defender has not won the accolade since Tottenham Hotspur's Steve Perryman in 1982.
