Claudio Marchisio 44

Claudio Marchisio scored the only goal of the match in Juventus' 1-0 victory over Napoli at Stadio Olimpico.

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri fielded Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet in attack, but the pair that scored a combined 41 goals last season did little during the match.

The home side's first chance came in the 15th minute when Del Piero set Trezeguet up for a chance from point-blank range. Napoli goalkeeper Nicolas Navarro made a quick reaction save, but the ball still spilled out to Sebastian Giovinco, who had the whole of the goal to aim at but seemed to lose his balance as he blazed the ball over the open goal.

Napoli had to wait until the 38th minute before their first sight of goal, which fell to Marek Hamšík, whose shot from a tight angle was smothered by Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Juve were the most threatening side in the first half though, and they got the goal they deserved just a minute before the interval.

Christian Poulsen squared the ball across the edge of the area and Marchisio hit a weak shot that deflected off Fabiano Santacroce to wrong-foot Navarro and curl into the opposite corner.

Ezequiel Lavezzi put the ball in the net late in the second half from a free kick, but play had already been halted for a dubious offside decision against Paolo Cannavaro.

In Saturday's other match, a brace from Mauro Zárate helped Lazio to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Bologna, their first home win since December.
