Brazilian midfielder Emerson has left AC Milan after having his contract terminated with immediate effect, the club announced on Tuesday night.

The 33-year-old asked for the decision to be taken for family reasons and the club have granted his request.

The release ends Emerson's two-year stay at Milan, for whom he played 39 matches in all competitions, including 11 Serie A matches this season.

"AC Milan announce that the footballer Ferreira Da Rosa Emerson has asked for and received an immediate release from the club, due to personal reasons," read a statement on the club's official website.

"We thank him for all he did during his time with the Rossoneri and Milan wish him the best in his future."

Emerson arrived in Milan from Real Madrid in 2007 but injuries have hampered his progress over the past two years.

The former Brazil international has yet to reveal any plans for the future and due to his age, it is conceivable he could retire from football altogether.
