Mexico sack Sven-Goran Eriksson

Friday, April 3, 2009

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) confirmed that Sven-Goran Eriksson has been sacked from his post as Mexico coach on Thursday, a day after a 3-1 loss to Honduras in World Cup qualifier.

Directors from the FMF were set to meet on Friday to discuss Eriksson's future but later decided to hold a press conference and announce his departure.

"We told Mr. Eriksson that his spell with the national team was over," said Justino Compean, president of the FMF in a news conference.

"We could not risk take any risks with World Cup qualification at stake."

Mexico are currently sit fourth in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying table and if they finish in their current position they will face a play-off against the fifth team from South America.

The 61-year-old Swede, the first foreigner to coach Mexico in 11 years, only took charge of El Tri when he succeeded Hugo Sánchez last June.
