Luís Figo calls it a day

Luís Figo has announced his retirement from professional football after Inter Milan were crowned Italian champions following AC Milan's 2-1 defeat at Udinese.

The 36-year-old had appeared close to retirement 12 months ago after a bust-up with former coach Roberto Mancini.

However, the appointment of compatriot José Mourinho made him reconsider and continue at the club for another year.

The ex-Barcelona and Real Madrid player has now decided to call time on a very successful 20-year career on the same night Inter won their 17th Scudetto.

"It is the first time I have won a title without actually playing," he told Portuguese newspaper A BOLA.

"I think it is the best way to end my career. I am leaving and I know that I will never again play at the highest level.

"I don't think I will accept any other type of offers either, even if I know they will arrive from outside Europe.

"The way I feel today, I think I'll turn them down."

There have been strong reports that Figo will take a desk job at Inter or work as a talent scout for the Nerazzurri.
